Welcome to Lackawanna, NY

Overview

Lackawanna is a city of about 18,000 residents in Erie County, just south of the city of Buffalo. Lackawanna also is bordered to the east by Cheektowaga and West Seneca, to the south by Hamburg and to the west by Lake Erie, although the waterfront is occupied by the former Bethlehem Steel facility. Lackawanna was the center of steel manufacturing throughout the 20th century, first by the Lackawanna Steel Company, which opened in 1903. Bethlehem Steel acquired the Lackawanna Steel Co. in 1922 and the plant at one time was the largest in the world, employing 20,000 people at its peak. Since the plant closed in the 1980s, other tenants have moved and other efforts have been made to revitalize the complex. Those efforts have been stalled by environmental concerns. Wind mills have been erected on the site, generating enough energy to power thousands of homes.

Essentials

For grocery shopping, there are Wegmans supermarkets on McKinley Parkway in southern Buffalo (about 3.5 miles south) and in the neighboring town of West Seneca, just 2.5 miles east of Lackawanna. There are two Tops Friendly Markets stores in Hamburg, just south of Lackawanna. The Tops on McKinley Parkway is about 3.5 miles south, and the Tops on South Park Avenue is about six miles from Lackawanna.

Recreation & Entertainment

Buffalo’s many attractions, including museums, an art gallery, sporting venues and nightclubs, are a quick drive north of Lackawanna. On the border of Buffalo and Lackawanna is the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, designed by noted architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Woodlawn Beach State Park in Hamburg has a beautiful beach and wonderful views of Lake Erie. A casino at the Hamburg Fairgrounds is a popular tourist attraction. The Erie County Fair, held in August in Hamburg, is among the larger county fairs in the country. The Hamburg Palace Theatre offers discount movies, and McKinley Mall 6 is a larger, multi-screen movie complex.

Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway runs through the southeast corner of Lackawanna. Route 5 runs north-south (although it’s marked east-west) through the west side of the city and is a busy route for traffic into and out of Buffalo. Route 62 runs north-south through the heart of Lackawanna.

Pros & Cons

This is a city that was built around the steel industry. The future of the old steel plant is still evolving. Busy shopping centers in Cheektowaga and in Hamburg are a quick drive. There are some beautiful buildings and wonderful attractions, like Our Lady of Victory Basilica, in or just outside of the city. Proximity to the bustling city of Buffalo is a plus.
