Overview

Hamburg is a large town on the western edge of Erie County, bordered to the north by the cities of Lackawanna and Buffalo, to the east by Orchard Park, to the south by the towns of Evans, Eden and Boston, and to the west by Lake Erie. Hamburg has a population of about 57,000 and includes a village also called Hamburg, the village of Blasdell, and several lakeside hamlets and communities. The Erie County Fair is held annually in August at the Hamburg Fairgrounds, and Buffalo Raceway is inside the fairgrounds. A casino with about 1,000 gaming machines is also at the fairgrounds. The Seaway Trail, a National Scenic Byway, travel through Hamburg along the shore of Lake Erie.


Essentials

For retail shopping, the McKinley Mall in Blasdell has a variety of stores, such as Sears, Macy’s and J.C. Penney. For grocery shopping, Hamburg has two Tops Friendly Markets (on South Park Avenue and on McKinley Parkway); Wegmans supermarkets can be found in McKinley Parkway and in West Seneca, just northeast of Hamburg. 



Recreation & Entertainment

The casino at the Hamburg Fairgrounds is a popular tourist attraction. The Erie County Fair, held in August, is among the larger county fairs in the country. The Hamburg Palace Theatre offers discount movies, and McKinley Mall 6 is a larger, multi-screen movie complex. Lake Erie is a popular destination, and Bennett Beach and Evangola State Park are quick drives from here. Buffalo and its many attractions are just north of Hamburg, and Orchard Park, home of the Buffalo Bills, is just east of here.



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway passes through Hamburg. Other major highways here include Route 62, Route 20 and Route 5.



Pros & Cons

The western edge of town is on the shore of Lake Erie. The Erie County Fair is held here, and the Hamburg Fairgrounds have a racetrack and a popular casino. Orchard Park and the Buffalo Bills are just east of here. Proximity to Buffalo and its many attractions are a plus.
