Welcome to Buffalo, NY

Overview

Known as the “Queen City,” Buffalo is the county seat of Erie County and the second-largest city in New York State, after only New York City. Buffalo is in westernmost New York, bordered to the north by Tonawanda; to the east by Amherst, Cheektowaga and West Seneca; to the south by Lackawanna; and to the west by Lake Erie. Buffalo once was a thriving industrial center, known for railroad commerce, steel production, automobile production and Great Lakes shipping. At one time, Buffalo was the 15th largest city in the United States. Like other so-called “Rust Belt” cities, Buffalo has had to adapt to new economic situations, and the regional economy now is a mix of industrial, light manufacturing, high technology and service-oriented private sector companies.

Essentials

For grocery shopping, Buffalo has two Wegmans stores in the city (on Amherst Street and on McKinley Parkway), and several more in surrounding towns and villages such as West Seneca, Depew, Amherst and Williamsville. Buffalo also has eight Tops Friendly Markets stores within the city borders. For retail shopping, downtown Buffalo has a plethora of stores, and the immediate region includes malls like the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga, the Boulevard Mall in Amherst, and Eastern Hills Mall in Williamsville. Buffalo also has several large shopping plazas.

Recreation & Entertainment

Where to start? If you like professional sports, Buffalo has the NFL Bills for football and the NHL Sabres for hockey, as well as the minor-league Buffalo Bisons for baseball. For art, the Albright-Knox Gallery is nationally acclaimed, and one of about 50 galleries in the city. For music, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra plays at Kleinhans Music Hall. For popular music, Buffalo has dozens of nightclubs and performance halls such as the HSBC Arena, which draws national acts.

Transportation & Traffic

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport, in nearby Cheektowaga, serves more than 5 million passengers each year. The Buffalo Metro Rail is a 6.4-mile long light rail system that runs from downtown Buffalo to the south campus of University at Buffalo. The New York State Thruway goes to and from Buffalo, and Interstate 190 and I-290 also are here.

Pros & Cons

Buffalo has a lot to offer. It’s a big city with lots to do and see, and although the city has seen better days, Buffalo is constantly reinventing itself economically, socially and culturally. People who live here cite the friendliness of their neighbors. The city has some of the best architecture in the country, loads of history, plenty of museums and art galleries, a thriving theater district and die-hard sports fans rooting for the local teams. It’s a quick drive to Niagara Falls and to Canada. Yes, it snows here, but Buffalo doesn’t deserve its reputation as one of the snowiest cities in the country. And when it snows, people here know how to handle it and have plenty of winter-time options.
