Overview

Amherst is among the more affluent towns in Erie County and the largest and most populated suburb, with more than 120,000 residents. The town is in north-central Erie County, bordered on the north by Tonawanda Creek and Niagara County, to the east by Clarence, to the south by Cheektowaga, and to the west by Tonawanda. Amherst is just northeast of the city of Buffalo and the town contains most of the village of Williamsville and several hamlets, including East Amherst. The town has regularly been listed in the upper half of the Top 100 Best Places to Live in America by CNNMoney.com.


Essentials

There are three public school districts that serve the town: Amherst Central, Sweet Home and Williamsville. The largest is Williamsville, whose schools consistently rank among the best in the region. The University at Buffalo has a large suburban campus in Amherst which includes top-shelf athletic facilities and modern residential units for undergrads and graduate students alike. Space is also dedicated to well maintained industrial parks with the town. The Village of Williamsville, established in 1850, boasts a stable base of single-family homes and a vital, walkable shopping district along Main Street.



Recreation & Entertainment

MusicalFare Theatre creates and produces a variety of performances each year. The Amherst Symphony Orchestra performs numerous free concerts for the community. Families enjoy the educational programs and special events hosted by the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Museum.



Transportation & Traffic

The New York State Thruway passes through the southern part of town. Several other highways traverse the town, including Interstate 290, Route 5 (known here as “Main Street”), and Route 78 (Transit Road), which marks the east town line.

Amherst is a vibrant, affluent community that has excellent public and private schools and is consistently ranked by national publications as among the best places in America to live. It has a well-respected police department and is judged to be one of the safest communities in the country. Cultural institutions, recreational facilities, libraries, galleries and diverse retail shopping options add to the quality of life.
